MY 2010 OSCAR PICKS -- Who want to place some bets??

YES! Finally I have seen enough movies this year to be able to have an educated guess on who's going to win the Oscars.

  • Leading Actor: Jeff Bridges -- I knew this dude was going to give a great performance right from his very first line in the movie "Fucking bowling alley".
  • Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz -- BEST PERFORMANCE HANDS DOWN. This dude rocked it.
  • Leading Actress: Sandra Bullok -- I saw The Blind Side, meh it was ok, but Bullok was good. I didn't see any of the other nominees, so I'm just going with her.
  • Supporting Actress: Maggie Gyllenhaal -- SECOND BEST PERFORMANCE. I really liked her in Crazy Heart. Such a good actress
  • Animated Feature: Up -- Not one of my favorite Pixar movies, but they still did a fantastic job.
  • Art Direction: Avatar
  • Cinematography: Inglorious Basterds -- I love the way Quentin shoots his movies because he always pays homage to films history. When you are watching his films, it's like you are watching the growth of film. There was one shot in particular in the opening scene of Basterds where Shosanna Dreyfus(Mélanie Laurent) runs out of the cabin away from Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) and is beautifully silhouetted by the cabin door as she runs off into the distance. This is clearly paying homage to the ending scene of John Fords "The Searchers" (Check the scene out HERE). So cool
  • Costume Design: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus -- I thought this movie had great art design. Watching this film you can't help but notice that specific Terry Gilliam style.
  • Directing: James Camoron "Avatar" -- This was a very hard decision... but I have to give it up to James for putting forth so much effort into creating exactly what he wanted. From creating a beautiful imaginary land that no one has seen before, to creating revolutionary 3-D viewing experience that no one has seen before. He is a true perfectionist. If only he was a perfectionist with the script...
  • Documentary Feature: Food, Inc. -- I didn't get to see this documentary, but I'm taking my brothers word for it as being good. But if I got to write the oscar ballot, I would have definitely put "Anvil! The story of Anvil" on there. It is one of my favorite documentaries.
  • Film Editing: District 9 -- This is my underdog pick... but I have good reasoning behind it. This film is jam packed with cinematic tactic used to create a realistic yet "movie" feel. Take this scene for example . Its great how they cut together the news shots, the real film shots, and the interview shots, to make it seem realistic. It allows the viewer to get emotionally attached to this story because the story is presented through media/documentary styles that we are so use to seeing and believing as being real. Its so smart.
  • Original Score: Up -- One of my favorite things about Pixar (or Disney movies in general) is the music. How great was the first 30 minutes of this movie! Absolutely no words were spoken, yet story couldn't have been stronger. Music played a key role in this movie and it was just... lovely.
  • Original Song: "The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)" -- This movie had great music. I suggest getting the soundtrack. I personally love "Fallin' & Flyin'"
  • Sound Editing: Avatar
  • Sound Mixing: Avatar -- Actually I have to admit, I don't know the difference between sound editing and sound mixing, but whatever, Avatar did a great job.
  • Visual Effects: Avatar -- Do I have to explain myself on this one?
  • Adapted Screenplay: Up in the Air -- FAVORITE MOVIE OF THE YEAR. If I was to become a film writer, I would want to write like Jason Reitman. Great humor.
  • Original Screenplay: Inglorious Basterds -- Quentin has the best fucking dialog! The way he writes is spectacular. Not one of the character's lines felt out of place or inappropriate to the characters image. It such an interesting story (explained more below)
Best Picture: Inglorious Basterds -- Now I know what you are saying "Bryson, you crazy. Only like 5 times in Academy Award history has there been a movie that doesn't win best picture AND best director". But I am calling it... this year will be one of those years. Quentin did a great job of continuing the progression of great cinema. It hard for me to put my thoughts on this movie into words but I am going to try to explain my feelings for this pick.
This film has so much more backbone than the other nominations this year (literally and metaphorically speaking) . It has so many levels to it. I'll start by talking about the film within the film. Quentin makes a Nazi film "Nation's Pride" that is in this film. It is a film that glorifies a Nazi sniper who killed an ungodly amount of enemies from a church bell tower. This film is the convergence point in the actual films climax, at the movie theater, where the good fight the evil.
If you look back in movie history, German propaganda films played a huge part in the evolution of cinema. They were made to glorify the Nazis and brainwash weak minded into thinking that killing all the jews is a good idea, and despite that horrible idea, the films were incredibly well done. They made Hitler look like Walt fucking Disney.
Then look at cinema now, especially Hollywood. It is an industry ran by the jews. Now I'm not sure if Quentin is Jewish or not (I'm sure a simple google'ing would answer that question) but that is beside my point. He created a movie, about a movie (that helped evolve movies). It is such an interesting cycle of inner-folding.
And the ending. Some people who watched the film say to me "But that wasn't historically correct.", I go "yea, no shit". If you want to learn history, read a history book, don't expect to learn fact through movie form. But think about it? Doesn't the ending make sense now. (spoiler) Hitler died in a burning movie theater, remarkably similar death to the Jews who died in the Nazi's ovens. It movie metaphor of an eye for an eye. Quentin used film to glorify the Jews, the same way Hitler used film to glorify the Nazis. Both used the same medium, but just on the opposite ends of the spectrum. And did you notice I used the word glorify. In German Propaganda films, the Nazis were glorified and the Jews were not. So it makes sense to call the movie Inglorious Basterds, since it is about the Inglorious Basterds who stood up for the not so glorious.
So to wrap it up, I think this movie was great. It has deep roots in cinema history which are called upon in itself, and Quentin dove in head first and was not afraid to hold anything back.
He told the story the way he wants his viewers to see it, through folklore, gore, and metaphor.

I hope that rant made any sense. I swear it does in my head. That is why I chose this movie for best picture over the other nominees, just because it has more to it than what meets the eye, because in my opinion Avatar is only what meets the eye.

Anyways, if you haven't noticed I am super excited about The Oscars, which are tomorrow night. So if you haven't' already go over to oscars.go.com and get their printable Oscar ballot and get ready for a good show!

UND vs. NDSU bike race poster I created -- More than just what meets the eye

I made this poster the other day for a friend volunteering for this bike race. I wasn't suppose to spend as much time on making it as I did. For some reason I got hooked in the creation and layout of the poster. But I would have to say that this is my greatest accomplishments in graphic design. The simplistic imagery and color palette is something I have never been able to pull off. Much like the Sachplakat (object) posters of Lucian Bernhard.
The most interesting thing about this layout, is how perfectly balanced it is. I started to analyze the paths and direction of the image and realized something very interesting. If you look at the image below, I made a basic tracing of the layout. I first drew a line right down the center because the image has strong bilateral symmetry. Next I drew lines on the ends of "walk softly and ride a big bike" (I didn't make the slogan) and then I connected the ends of the slogan to the bottom center point. As you can see the date lies perfectly inside of the triangle. I thought "hmm thats interesting". So I kept drawing. I drew boxes around the school logos. Then I made two long lines from the bottom corners of the boxes to the ends of the slogan. This is where things got interestingly weird. The "25th Annual Bike Race" sits nicely in the triangle, just like the date did in the lower triangle under the slogan. The intersection lines are almost exactly perpendicular. And also, as you can see the bike's center lies PERFECTLY in the intersection of the two long lines. Not only is this intersection perfectly in the bike's center, but it lies PERFECTLY in the center of the page. Weird.

The funny thing is is that I did not do this on purpose. I laid out the poster by eye, only using a horizontal center line for reference.

It is eerie the compositional power of the human eye. I don't believe this is just coincidence. There is a mathematical explanation to visually pleasing images. Much like the Golden Ratio. This stuff is just so interesting.

Camper.com -- Dope shoes

My friend turned me on to Camper.com. They have great quality shoes. Adverage price is about $110, but these shoes will probably last you through 2 pairs of those nikes you got, and still stay comfortable. Below are some of their styles I like

MARUO - These look interesting... in a good way

PEU - Urban/Classic design
LOCUS - A straight high-top classic. Clean leather lookBROTHERS - This is a grown man shoe. Great color and shape. Good leather finish.

*PERSONAL FAVORITE* PELOTAS - These would go great with shorts, jeans, or maybe even a casual formal event. Black leather on a casual shoe?! Dope! I might have to get these.
